Understandably, Relatably, Open-mindedly
Listening to others can be difficult. So can sharing your opinion with others or discussing certain topics. Maybe you have a family member that you stopped talking to because they have a different opinion about COVID vaccinations.
To help people communicate with each other, we came up with Debatably. Debatably is a debate learning tool aimed at students to help them become better at discussions and debates. It encourages people to listen to others, even when they have a different opinion, and to try to get a better understanding of each other.
Accessibility is created through structuring the debate into 4 rounds in which the participants can express their own view on the statement and are challenged to create arguments for one of the sides. By facilitating the multiple rounds, switching between one’s own opinion and empathizing with the far ends, the debate allows for more nuance.
While moving through the rounds, an AI detects what people are saying and uses this to create an overview of the statements, arguments and rebuttals that were made.
This overview allows the people to see and structure what was said, what hasn’t been rebutted, and learn from the debate.
With this project we aim to teach people how to debate in a fun and accessible way and who knows, maybe you will be able to talk to that family member again after a few rounds of Debatably.
