Motivational Chatbot

How a chatbot can create motivation in the home office

During the COVID-19 pandemic, people were forced to work from home (WFH) by their governments. But even before Covid, WFH became a trend and after the pandemic ended the number of people WFH in the Netherlands doubled.

WFH generally seems to increase the productivity of people, but they struggle with their motivation. This research aims to help these people stay motivated WFH using a chatbot. Therefore the following research question was formulated;

How can a chatbot create extrinsic motivation for people working from home through the design of people’s level of control over the chatbot?

Throughout three days participants were asked to use a chatbot, which is based on the self-determination theory, at specific times while WFH. Results show that participants actively using the bot have an increase in motivation. Not necessarily due to the advice the bot gives, but the support it provides and its intention.
