HZ Sensor Boat

Biodegradable Automated Sensor Boat

The research minor “Sensor boat” had been assigned to a project group including 3 International (Chinese Students) and 3 Dutch students. In the HZ workshop, a two meter black boat has been built by a previous group. At this point a couple of sensors that are supposed to be mounted on and inside of the boat have been developed and their values can be sent to a remote laptop. There are three systems, one for the GPS, one for video and one system that can send all the data to the cloud. These systems have been tested and proven that they work individually in an office environment. The boat is not ready to be used with a sensor to measure the turbidity in the Oosterschelde. The reason for this is that the three systems have not been combined and there is no way of connecting the sensor to the boat. The boat must be able to take three measurements on pre-arranged dates and locations. These locations are the Oosterschelde, Roggeplaat and nearby the Plompetoren. The measurement should be done according to the quality definitions of Rijkswaterstaat, ministry of infrastructure and water management at the end of May 2019. The project goal is to make the sensor boat functional with all the systems and complete three measurements; one before, one during and one after the dredging. With this data an overview for Rijkswaterstaat is expected. It is important to monitor the boat and the sensor behavior during testing and make an overview from this data.

Within less than 2 weeks we prepared the boat for a test in the harbour of Vlissingen. Here we noticed some major issues with the GPS, that the boat kept overheating and some other issues that are described in the report down below. During this project I had been working on the hardware problems and the three major topics I focused on were the installing of the batteries and keeping them save from water, the cooling of the boat and the attachment of the sensor of Rijkswaterstaat.
